First Meeting of the National English Proficiency Program(NEPP) Mentors

Posted by Shyle on 3:53 AM in
Last Tuesday, my co-teacher informed me that we have a NEPP meeting this day, at 3:00P.M in the Division Office. I thought it was about the coming seminar this summer which falls usually on the last week of May, yet I was wondering why it was too early to plan about the seminar. We had just end the school year 2009-2010 and is excited to have a vacation to rest and relax even for a short time. But still I attended the meeting for it is a call from our division with a memorandum signed by the Assistant Schools Division Superintendent.

I arrived at 3:13 P.M at the meeting area. I was expecting that I came late, but sad to say that there were only seven NEPP mentors attending out of 40. In fact 4 of us are not trained mentors. We are only trained by the Convergys Multi-media Teaching in English however they are adopting us which starts this year on the recommendation of our Regional Director. And we are very proud of that.

We informed other mentors and waited for them until 4:00 P. M. Three of them came so we became 10 but we're still very few. Yet, our Education Supervisor in English decided to start the meeting despite the amount of attendance. As she presided the meeting, she asked us why we have a quarterly meeting and is it helpful for us mentors? Her emotions about the attendance can really be perceived on her face. She was so upset of the other mentors because her effort of distributing the memorandum in every district was not given importance. It was so sad to think that she prepared snacks for us (40 pieces of bread) and planned to treat us in Jollibee after the meeting. We understand what she felt.

We had agreed about the schedule of our quarterly meeting and assigned a coordinator in every district to remind mentors about the scheduled meeting. I was appointed by her as a District IV Coordinator. She had no choice but to appoint me because I was alone representing our District, hehe.

We were asked about our accomplishments as mentors and shared ideas on how to improve the program. We were told ahead also about the Summer Reading Camp starting April 19, 2010 which we are the front lines of the said activity. I like the activity , but it's so sad because my vacation time will only be 10 days starting tomorrow. But since, this is our work as a mentor and educator, we are always ready to extend help because teaching is a mission.
