Role-Models in Education

Posted by Shyle on 6:18 AM in
Values are caught and not taught. Children absorb values for better or worse, through example of others, essentially through the role of parents, teachers, leaders and peers. They observe and listen. They catch and imitate. They ponder and judge.

What is a moral value? A value is what we hold dear and precious. It is called moral value if it affects the way we live, act and behave, alone or with others. If values are absorbed well in the hearts of every child and lived with consistency out of and leading to the good are called virtues however if it is leading to the bad become vices.

How can teachers help their students develop the moral values of their pupils into virtues? Role-modeling is one important task of a teacher. Teachers exist in education for the purpose of modeling. Good role-models in education inspire the learners and greatly help for the effectiveness of teaching.

But how could teachers act as a good role-models to their students? Children of today live by examples so teachers must practice a good set of values. A teacher who has right values, who live and practices those values, will no doubt pass on right values to his students. Teaching through good example means "Do first, then teach". It is clearly stated that a teacher could not teach virtues if he himself have no virtues in life.

The maxim, "Do what I teach you, but do not do what I do" is a foolish maxim. If all teachers teach that way, effective teaching couldn't be attained. Virtues should be lived well by a teacher first so student can emulate him and be lived throughout their life as well. The right kind of models can make the young minds build the very best which will be internalized into their own value systems. When children grow up, they will not depart from it.

Parents and teachers should go hand in hand in teaching good moral values to the children. They must be the partners in developing the innocent minds into fully transformed individuals who have virtues in life rather than vices. However, teachers must bear in mind always that teaching good moral values is not enough. They must have the willingness to vitalize their convictions with deeds, practice the virtues and good moral habits over and over throughout life. They must be the teacher whose manners are gentle and refined, whose acts of courtesy and politeness reflect a good disposition, serious and efficient, humane and democratic, whose character mirrors the inner soul appealing to God who created us, the total picture of a good role-model.
